The Schweenssand is a nature reserve in the Hamburg district of territory in the district of Harburg .

The nature reserve is around 35  hectares . It is located in the area where the Elbe splits the river and extends roughly from river kilometer 611 to 614.5 on the south bank of the Süderelbe . The nature reserve includes the outer dike areas, which are up to 250 meters wide, just below the state border with Lower Saxony to just above the railway bridge over the Süderelbe. It is cut through by the Federal Motorway 1 , which crosses the Süderelbe at river kilometer 613. The nature reserve, together with the nature reserve “ Heuckenlock ” on the north bank of the Süderelbe, forms the FFH area “Heuckenlock / Schweenssand”.

The area is of freshwater tidal flats with tidal creeks , sand and mud flats and riparian forest residues and reeds dominated areas. It is located in the tidal area of ​​the Elbe and is subject to river dynamics.

Together with the “Heuckenlock” nature reserve, the nature reserve is one of the most species-rich areas in Hamburg. Around 700 plant species were counted here, including the Wiebelschmiele, also known as the swamp Schmiele , and the hemlock water fennel , which only occur in the freshwater tidal region of the Elbe. In addition, u. a. Reeds , narrow - and Bulrush , salt - and triangular pond texting , Common beach cornices , reed canary grass and bur-reed and marsh marigold find. At the Spülsäumen grow sorrel , smartweed , ragwort and various sedges , the large couch grass connect stocks. The checkerboard flower occurs in wet meadow areas.

The reed zones provide food and habitat for numerous animal species. In addition, they are, like flow-calmed bays, important for young fish, for which they represent a growing area.

Reeds and alluvial forest areas, which are often in a primeval forest-like state with a high proportion of old and dead wood , are also important habitats for numerous bird species. So come here u. a. Pond warbler and marsh warbler , bag tit , oriole , nightingale , long-eared owl and various woodpeckers .

The area, which the nature conservation association GÖP - Society for ecological planning e. V. - is cared for, has been under nature protection since August 31, 1993. Four water sports clubs that had their berths here had to give way for the designation of the nature reserve. They found a new home in the Harburg inland port .
