description

Vegetative characteristics

The hemlock water fennel is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of growth of up to 200 centimeters. The alternate leaves are bipinnate with narrow tips. The overwater leaves have narrow, diamond-shaped leaf sections reminiscent of Asplenium adiantum-nigrum .

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to August. The flowers appear in 1st order umbels, which in turn are arranged in 2nd order umbels. All single flowers are petiolate.

Occurrence

The hemlock water fennel is endemic to the Tide - Elbe area . Uniquely in the world, the Schierlings water fennel only grows from the Hamburg Holzhafen to the Geesthacht barrage . The largest remaining stocks in 2015 are in the Heuckenlock nature reserve on the Süderelbe . It is a character species of the Nasturtio officinale-Oenanthetum conioidis, a reed association, from the association Sparganio-Glycerion. The species plays a role in the discussion and legal dispute about the further deepening of the Elbe .

Danger

Hemlock water fennel is classified as “critically endangered” according to the Red List of Ferns and Flowering Plants in Germany (Korneck et al. 1996). It is an endemic species, so that both the federal government and the states concerned have a special responsibility for the conservation of the species, which is why it was classified as a national type of responsibility within the Federal Government's National Strategy for Biodiversity .

The Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive 92/43 / EEC ( FFH Directive ) classifies the hemlock water fennel as a priority species . This status obliges the Federal Republic of Germany to implement protective measures as soon as possible to improve the conservation status of this species.
