The Alte Süderelbe is an old arm of the Elbe and has been an elongated lake in the southwest of Hamburg between the districts of Finkenwerder and Francop since the 1970s . With an area of 60 hectares, it is the second largest lake in Hamburg's urban area after the Alster .

“The Alte Süderelbe extends with a maximum width of 150 m over a length of approx. 5700 m and thus has an elongated shape directed from west to east. The basin is flattened by the entry of suspended matter and the effects of eutrophication and in the middle of the water it still reaches depths of 1.5–2.0 m. Water depths of up to 3.5 m can only be found in the western part of the Old South Elbe "

Elbarme near Hamburg around 1790, the most westerly branch of the river is known as the "Old Southern Elbe"

This body of water was originally the western section of the Süderelbe between the junction from the Köhlbrand and the confluence with the Lower Elbe . As early as 1790, the main part of the water of the Süderelbe was diverted into the Köhlbrand, the estuary was significantly reduced and from this time on it was called the Alte Süderelbe .

After the devastating storm surge in 1962 , this confluence in the area of the Mühlenberger Loch was closed, raised and dyed in 1963 and thus separated from the main stream. At the same time, the connection to the rest of the Süderelbe was closed so that the Alte Süderelbe has no longer been subject to the influence of the tides . A road connection to Neuenfelde and Cranz and the runway of the Airbus Deutschland GmbH ( EADS ) air yard now runs over the north-western barrier .

In the course of the port expansion of Finkenwerder, the Alte Süderelbe was further narrowed to the size of a drainage ditch by backfilling in the area east of the Hamburg aluminum works.

At the south-eastern end of the water there is a connection with the Finkenwerder outer harbor at the Auedeich am Deichsiel Storchennest, and furthermore, via the Schleusenfleet, there is a tributary from the southern waters of Moorwetter and Moorburger Landscheide .

The western area of the current lake and its banks form the Finkenwerder Süderelbe nature reserve .

Fish fauna

The Alte Süderelbe is an old river of the Elbe that is managed by the Hamburg fishing association. It is one of the so-called Hamburg association waters, in which members of the fishing clubs affiliated to the association can practice fishing. The following fish species are found in the water: carp , tench , roach , rudd , aland , bream , pike , pikeperch , asp , perch , ruff and eel . Especially carp and bream can reach high weights in the shallow and in parts very shallow (up to 2 meters) and muddy water due to the good food supply. Zander and eels also grow very well there. In the summer there is a common abundance of woolly crabs . Fishing is strictly prohibited in the nature reserve areas.
