The Eichbaumsee is located in the south-east of Hamburg in the marshland in the Allermöhe district .
The lake is about one kilometer long, 280 meters wide and has an area of 0.24 km². Its greatest depth is 16 meters. It was created in 1972 after the sand was extracted for the A25 motorway and is only fed by groundwater.
Until the expansion of the regatta course in the Dove Elbe (1977) it was still in direct contact with it, today there is probably only a small amount of water exchanged with the Dove Elbe through permeable layers of sediment.
The lake was a bathing lake popular with the Hamburg population , but it is often heavily infested with algae in hot summers. Despite renovation measures through deep water aeration with a system designated as "Polyp I" in March 2005 and in March 2007 with "Polyp II", bathing had to be prohibited because of the blue-green algae . A general bathing ban has been issued since the end of August 2007.
The Eichbaumsee is stocked with carp , pike , pikeperch and tench by the Hamburg Anglers' Association and was particularly well known for catching large carp before the fish deaths in 2009.
On the lawn east of the lake hosts the annual summer Wutzrock - Festival instead.
