The comprehensive school Barmen is a comprehensive school in the Wuppertal district of Barmen . In 2015 it was awarded the German School Prize endowed with 100,000 euros for its “excellent school climate” .

building

The school is located directly on the Wupper on a former factory site near downtown Barmer, the Adlerbrücke suspension railway station is a few minutes' walk away. The current building was built in 1997/1998 according to the designs of the architect Christoph Parade. The school moved there in October 1998; before that, teaching took place temporarily at various school locations.

The materials glass and brick are characteristic of the design . The elongated central break hall with the characteristic sloping glass facade connects all wings of the school. The classrooms are separated according to grades in the north, while the library, the cafeteria and the gym are on the south side of the hall. Solar energy and rainwater are used for heat regulation . The glass facades of the building face south and the walls of the northern rooms are clad with brick. The sun can heat the massive walls in winter, in summer the water surfaces in front of the building and plants in the interior cool the air.

German School Award 2015

The school was recognized for the fact that “students, teachers and parents treat each other with respect”. One of the implemented ideas is to give each student a responsibility, for example as a school paramedic or mentor for younger people. The school is in a socially deprived area , half of the students grow up in a single-parent family, a third have a migration background. The jury also pointed out that no student has left school without a degree in years. Inclusion is also sought in physical education . At the request of the students, there is a dress code that prohibits racist labels; The use of mobile phones is restricted to specific teaching situations by a media usage regulation. The afternoon lessons are used to “straighten out” the lessons. There are two social workers, a social worker, two caretakers and a large kitchen team.
