The upper level college at Bielefeld University is an experimental school in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a scientific institution of the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University.

history

The upper level college was founded by Hartmut von Hentig together with the Bielefeld Laboratory School in 1969 as a "structural feature" of Bielefeld University and opened in 1974. Ludwig Huber was scientific director from 1989 to 2002.

From 1974 to 2005, the upper level college offered a four-year course as a "college" and "new tertiary level ", which integrated the learning content of the upper level and the university basic course and in this context general education in interdisciplinary courses, exemplary study-oriented specialization in two (from approx 25 selectable) subjects and practical application of what has been learned in projects. In this way, the students were able to embark on a course of study and switch to a higher semester of the chosen course, in some cases also to the main course.

However, its singular position in the education system of the Federal Republic or the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia prompted the state government to phase out this course in 2005 and to reduce the trial assignment of the upper level college to the area of the upper level. Hans-Günter Rolff supported this restructuring.

Organization and principle

As an experimental school, the Oberstufen-Kolleg has the task of developing, testing and evaluating curricula , teaching and learning forms for upper secondary level and for the transition to studies .

Interdisciplinary basic courses and basic courses in German, mathematics and English are offered. Another special feature is the tutor system, which gives the students the opportunity to choose a teacher as a special advisor up to the Abitur and contact person for all questions.

As an experimental upper level, the upper level college concludes with the general higher education entrance qualification, but differs in its reform-oriented pedagogy from the upper level at comprehensive schools and grammar schools. The upper level college has been offering the three-year course (with various options for shortening the training period to two and a half years through a "lateral entry") since summer 2002.

Jutta Obbelode has been the head of the group since May 9, 2012, succeeding Hans Kroeger, who retired on February 3, 2012. Further members of the college management are Michaele Geweke as pedagogical director and Ian Voss as organizational director.

The Oberstufe-Kolleg issues teaching materials as well as publications and materials on school development , evaluation and teaching research. It thus documents the results of its research and development work in projects that are recorded in a research and development plan that is updated every two years.

Since the winter semester of 2011, some of the basic courses in the main phase have been bundled in profiles under a specific guiding theme (e.g. "doing beautiful things - thinking beautifully"). These can be chosen by the students at the end of the second semester.

architecture

Lesson area on field III

When it was planned, the architecture of the upper-level college was seen as an important element that should represent the educational concept of the school.

It should also be possible for the students to learn as a community on a large area and to be able to retreat to undisturbed learning locations. For this reason there are three large fields in the center of the school, which are separated from each other by raised galleries, so-called “wiches”. In the fields, lessons take place within movable wooden partitions; however, they are also used for events such as B. Performances and gatherings. The "Wiche" can not only be visited for small group work or to stay in the breaks, but also accommodate the workstations of the lecturers to ensure better accessibility. A closed staff room does not exist.

There are also separate specialist rooms for languages, natural sciences, music, art, media rooms, an auditorium and a library. The sports hall is located between the two schools in the same complex (see Laborschule Bielefeld ), which are connected by the so-called “Schulstrasse”, and is used jointly.

Awards and collaborations

At the awarding of the German School Prize on June 9, 2010 in Berlin , the Upper Level College was recognized as the best school in the “Performance” category.

The upper level college is a UNESCO project school. Your goals are international understanding and cooperation. The college has been working with the German Humboldt School in Guayaquil on the Daular development project since 1998 . The project won a UN award in 2006/2007 for its unique character. In addition, the school is a member of the 'Blick über den Zaun' school association and the 'View towards Diversity' network.
