The Bielefeld University Archive is a central facility of Bielefeld University . It stores the files and other archival-worthy documents created at the university's facilities and makes them accessible for use. In addition, the Bielefeld University Archive collects printed matter, posters, audio and video documents as well as bequests and maintains a small reference library on the history of the university. The archive material comprises approx. 1,200 running meters of shelving (approx. 50% developed), which are distributed over more than 100 holdings.

history

Archive planning at the university, which was founded in September 1969 with far-reaching reform claims under the significant influence of Helmut Schelsky , was almost as old as the university itself. As early as 1972, the establishment of a "university policy archive" was considered as a pure collection of material. On the occasion of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the university, in 1987 the rectorate intended to set up a series of publications entitled “University Archives”, which - published annually - should contain the history of the university and portraits of people. Finally, the former chancellor and honorary senator of the university, Dr. Eberhard Firnhaber, at the end of 1994, on the establishment of a permanently subject-specific university archive. He argued that the aging university was about to lose knowledge of its founding, the founding concept and its realization. The establishment of the university archive in 1996 enabled the university to maintain the archive in accordance with legal requirements.

The archive, initially provided with a historian financed by the employment office and accompanied by the archives officer, is assigned to the university's public relations department as the office of the rectorate. Following the structural concept, an archive tectonics comprising 14 departments was initially developed. In close cooperation with the Bielefeld city archive, a database-supported archiving system was created, which should enable users and employees to access the archived material more easily than with conventional finding aids. During the development phase, the holdings of the most important university committees and institutions could already be taken over. At the same time, a lot of time had to be spent on increasing the awareness of the archive and on raising awareness of the tasks of the university archive, which is planned as the central archive for the entire university. The support from the university management, u. a. by means of a circular from the Chancellor ("Provisional regulation for securing archival-worthy material"), contributed significantly to increasing acceptance, enforcing the obligation to offer and deliver, and to reduce "wild" cassations. Contact was established with contemporary witnesses from the founding committee, the scientific advisory board, politics and administration through the person of the development commissioner, who had been the university chancellor himself since June 1968 of the establishment and development of the “Reform University” Bielefeld. The resulting interviews supplemented the tradition of university history as well as file transfers from the university environment, e.g. B. by the first chairman of the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft, Rudolf-August Oetker . However, the considerable loss of files from the founding period also shows that it was almost too long a period of time before the archive was set up.

In 2002, a full-time position was set up for the university archivist Martin Löning, who had already provided technical support for the development process. After the AUGIAS-Express archive software had been used for a long time, AUGIAS-Archive 9.1, which offers significantly more functionality, was acquired in 2015 . In terms of personnel, it was possible to create a further half position in the senior service from 2014, which was increased to a full position in 2017. The university archive has been providing technical support for the indexing of Niklas Luhmann's estate since 2015 . The estate will be viewed, developed, recorded and presented to the public in a project funded by the DFG. You can find out more about the project on the website of the Luhmann project.

At the beginning of 2018, 104 completely or partially recorded holdings with over 22,000 archive units were in the university archive. The "Central Bodies / University Commissions" group (including founding committee / scientific advisory board, convention, senate, rectorate and public relations department) has a share of a good 10 percent of this. In addition, the "Structure and Planning" inventory group, which primarily contains external origins, is particularly meaningful for the planning and founding phase of Bielefeld University, as is the already mentioned inventory of the university society. In addition to holdings from the "Administration" department and contributions from the individual faculties, there are also important (partial) bequests from important people in the history of the university in the archive. a. by Helmut Schelsky and Karl Peter Grotemeyer . The university archives also keep some legacies that one would not suspect here, including a. by Mathilde Vaerting , Georg Simmel or Gottfried Salomon-Delatour . There are also continuously expanded collections of university history, such as pamphlets, biographical collections, newspaper clippings, posters, leaflets, photos and films. A detailed inventory overview is available online.
