AUGIAS archive is a computer program for managing professionally managed archives , which was initially developed by Gerhard A. Auer and Karl-Theo Heil. The program is used by a large part of the state, municipal, church and aristocratic archives in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Luxembourg , Italy , Denmark and the United States . The number of users is now over 1400 (in 2015).

Historical

The forerunner of AUGIAS-Archiv was the “Nixas-Archiv” program distributed by Nixdorf Computer AG . It was used for the inventory of archives, the creation of finding aids and user administration. Inventories and finding aids were printed on the basis of WordPerfect -4.2- macros , the user administration was based on the notebook database of WordPerfect Office 2.0. The distortion data from Nixas-Archiv is originally in the »WordPerfect 4.2 secondary file« format. Nixas-Archiv was recommended in 1988 by the working group of full-time archivists in the Baden-Württemberg City Council as a state-level procedure for municipal archives . In the same year, the Rhineland archives advice center and the Westphalian archives office recommended the program for the local municipal and aristocratic archives there.

After Siemens took over Nixdorf Computer AG in 1990 , the program developers Gerhard A. Auer and Karl-Theo Heil founded AUGIAS-Data in 1991 and renamed the program "AUGIAS-Archiv". AUGIAS-Data is still concerned with further development and user support today. The first AUGIAS archive version (4.0 as the successor to Nixas archive 3.0) was based on the relational database DataPerfect 2.1 under MS-DOS .

Current versions

In 1996, AUGIAS-Archiv 5.0 was converted to version 6, with it the change to the Windows platform and the change to Microsoft Access as the database backend. AUGIAS-Archiv has also supported SQL servers ( Microsoft SQL Server , Oracle ) since 1999 . In 2000, AUGIAS Archive 7.0 was the world's first archive program that presented both inventory overviews and detailed finding aids on the Internet. Since 2007 AUGIAS-Archiv 8.x can also be used with PostgreSQL servers.

The current version AUGIAS-Archiv 9.2 contains modules for creating finding aids, user and magazine management, restoration, access management, multimedia archiving as well as for intra and internet research.
