Since 1988 she has been the initiator of the women's forum in the Association of German Art Teachers .

Irene Below got involved in 1998 against the name Richard-Kaselowsky -Haus for the Kunsthalle Bielefeld , which is why the director at the time, Thomas Kellein, approached the school office, as he promised to support this "teacher who went wild" from there.

She was and is often engaged in social policy; In the 1980s, for example, she co-founded a self-managed day-care center with alternative pedagogy, and in 2017 of the self-help initiative "We age differently for us".

Below is married and has two sons. She lives in Werther near Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Her work focuses on settlement architecture of the 1920s, feminist art and cultural studies, artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, the periphery and center in art, the art world and science, as well as studies on the exile of artists and scientists.
