The Ulmer Verein - Verband für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften eV (UV) is a professional association for German-speaking art historians founded in Ulm in 1968 .

history

In response to the 11th German Art Historians' Day , the congress of the Association of German Art Historians , the Ulmer Verein was founded in Ulm in October 1968 to represent the so-called mid-level staff (assistants, volunteers, research assistants or assistants, etc.) and the student body did not see these two groups represented by the VDK and their applications and ideas were not taken into account in a discussion of current university reform issues at the German Art Historians' Day. The establishment of the “radical university association” ( Dario Gamboni ) was also understood as the conscious creation of a politically left-wing alternative to the established generation of art historians and as a “confrontation with the conservative view” of the subject, with which prominent representatives of the younger scholars like Martin Warnke argued in the media. For the following 12th Art Historians Day, in the planning of which the Ulmer Verein participated in 1972, the representatives of the 1968ers (among others by Horst Bredekamp , Klaus Herding and Franz-Joachim Verspohl ) primarily contributed to Marxist- inspired topics and theories such as “Basis and superstructure ”,“ Art history and economic basis ”,“ Class character of art ”,“ History of art history in competitive and monopoly capitalism ”and“ Art history and capital ”in the form of sections and presentations that were rejected by the VDK and prepared by the activists therefore were presented in an "alternative program" to the official event. The association continues its tradition of understanding the programmatic publications and events of the Ulmer Verein as “exemplary for a committed, political, left-wing art history”, for example with the special issues What is left? (2006) and Aesthetics of Resistance (2016) of the critical reports .

aims

As a non-profit interest group of art and cultural scholars, it represents the interests of the specialist professional groups in universities and research, museums, monument conservation, cultural policy, journalism and educational work. A special concern of the Ulmer Verein is the promotion of art history students. Unlike in the Association of Art Historians, students can also become members of the association. In terms of promoting young talent in the field of art history, the Ulm Association therefore also financially and logistically supports the art history student congress (KSK) that takes place every semester .

Board

The board was newly elected on November 22, 2018 and consists of the following members: Henrike Haug (Dortmund), Ann-Kathrin Hubrich (Hamburg), Andreas Huth (Berlin), Franziska Lampe (Munich) and Yvonne Schweizer (Bern).

Critical reports

The publication organ of the Ulmer Verein is the critical reports , which appear four times a year in Jonas-Verlag, as an imprint from arts + science Weimar GmbH.
