The critical reports. Zeitschrift für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften (kb) are a specialist journal that has been published quarterly since 1973 - currently by Jonas-Verlag and with a circulation of 600 copies (as of 2010). The magazine is published by the Ulm Association - Association for Art and Cultural Studies eV . The editorial team for the critical reports currently consists of Julian Blunk, Regine Hess, Kathrin Rottmann and Henry Kaap.

Foundation and orientation

The critical reports were founded in 1973 against the background of the methodological crisis in the subject of art history and the emergence of a new critical art history , the new art history . The impetus for a cultural studies-oriented journal that would take on explosive topics that have not been dealt with and published elsewhere was the diverse demands for a new, critical art history that is not limited to the classical areas of art history. Since then, the critical reports have been seen primarily as a platform for an increasingly complex discussion of methods, as well as a forum for transdisciplinary contributions on topics such as ethnocentrism, interculturality or gender studies .

The magazine contains articles and reports from all areas of art and cultural studies and provides information on current developments. The focus is on the consideration of the social background as well as the economic and political context. The critical reports are also the communication organ of the Ulmer Verein - Verband für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften e. V.

Formalia

The magazine format roughly corresponds to the paper format DIN C5 (15.7 cm × 23.5 cm).

As a rule, the magazine appears with four physical issues per year; In some cases, however, the physical issues were classified as double issues. In two years (1987 and 1973) only three physical issues appeared.

In the first two years, the volume and year numbers differed from one another: in 1973 only three issues appeared, but also - the fourth issue, which only appeared in 1974 - was counted as the first "volume" of the magazine. Then in 1974 three more double issues (1/2, 3/4 and 5/6) appeared; Since 1975, the first issue of the respective year is also the first issue of the respective 'volume' (1975 = volume 3; 2019 = volume 47).

The actual appearance of the printed annual lags Summary: In May 2020 Issue 4/2019 is still out .

The journal has three different ID numbers in the journal database: 124818-2 (1973-1975) and 531823-3 (from 1975) for the printed editions and 2722286-X for the (retro) digital copies.
