Art history student congress
The Art History Student Congress (KSK) is organized by students of art history and science. As part of a scientific congress , students from German-speaking countries should be given the opportunity to exchange ideas and network, to discuss university policy issues and to give their first scientific lectures on changing topics.
aims
In addition to the research-related content, the most important goals are the inter-institute exchange and the networking of students across the borders of Germany , Austria and Switzerland . It is the statutory aim of the KSK to hold a congress every semester, which is also the general assembly of the KSK. The institutes take turns as hosts.
history
In response to the 11th German Art Historians' Day , the congress of the Association of German Art Historians (VDK), in October 1968 in Ulm, the Ulmer Verein (UV) was founded as a representative of the so-called mid-level staff (assistants, volunteers, academic staff and assistants, etc.) and the student body, as these two groups did not see themselves represented by the VDK and their applications and ideas from a discussion of current university reform issues at the German Art Historians' Day were not taken into account.
Foundation of the Art History Student Conference (KSK)
In January 1969 the student body in Bonn founded its own forum, the Kunsthistorische Studentenkonferenz (KSK), parallel to the meeting of the Ulmer Verein , which should take place once a year. The primary goals of this are the exchange of information, the advancement of the study reform and the representation of student interests externally.
In the years that followed, the KSK was primarily a forum for discussion on university policy, which, as the representative body of the student body, called for a rethinking of the content and methods of art history. So-called “active groups” set themselves the goal of developing art-historical alternatives from 1971 onwards, which should lead to the democratization of all areas of society.
From 1971 the Ulm Association and the KSK worked even more closely together and organized joint meetings. Together they wanted to develop alternatives to the conservative structures of the institutes and the VDK. The students have now been given the opportunity to become members of the Ulm Association.
Connection to the VDS
At the 1972 KSK in Frankfurt am Main, it was decided to join the Association of German Student Unions (VDS). In addition to the financing, it was hoped for greater impact, new impulses and a clearer organizational structure. But the KSK was renamed the "Art History Section of the VDS Conference Art and Media" and was increasingly lost in the large umbrella organization. Theoretical work was superimposed on the content, which sometimes led to chaotic course of the conference. After contact with the VDS office in Bonn and with it the financing, the KSK took place for a few years only on a small scale and through the commitment of a few.
The KSK 1983 in Kiel finally represented a turning point. A reanimation of the KSK began with regard to new ideas, organization and content-related collaboration. In 1984 it was decided in Hamburg to rename the gathering of art history students again and to contact the VDS again, but this was ended when the VDS was dissolved in 1990. The KSK established itself and took place regularly in the following years. In November 1994, at the KSK in Bochum , there was renewed interest in the question of how the KSK sees itself. One wanted to raise this question to a section at the following KSK in Marburg . The KSK should also be made better known, especially in the barely represented new federal states.
Renaming to Art History Student Congress (KSK)
At the conference in Marburg in May 1995 , it was finally decided to formally rename the Art History Student Conference (the KSK) to the Art History Student Conference (the KSK), since the conference was less of an advisory assembly (conference) of a permanent institution, but a multi-day (between three and five days) specialized political decision-making body (congress), which is not quorate outside the framework of the conference. In addition, a central KSK folder was created, the statutes were amended and the possibilities of the Internet for the KSK were considered for the first time.
There was a slight shift in the emphasis of the conference format at the 69th KSK in Berlin (2005). In a portrait seminar under the direction of Philipp Zitzlsperger at the Humboldt University, a group of students was formed who, together with Zitzlsperger as a board member of the Ulm Association, organized the KSK as a scientific conference. A call for papers was published under the motto “By students for students - the portrait05”, which met with a lively response. The presented student research results on the portrait from the early modern period to the present were published in 2007. The format of the scientific conference while maintaining an advisory and university-political plenary gave the KSK new impetus.
Since the decision to introduce the BA / MA courses, this topic in particular has been the subject of discussions at the KSK, for example at the 64th KSK in the winter semester 2000 in Bochum, in Tübingen in the winter semester 2006 or in Berlin in the winter semester 2007 .
Congress organization
The theme of the congress is determined by the organizing students themselves. A call for papers (and call for workshops) will be advertised. From the received Abstracts which are speaker * inside (and workshop leaders *) is selected. The organizing students take care of the complete organization, implementation and financing of the congress. They are supported by the Ulmer Verein , but without questioning the autonomy of the student organization of the KSK.
At the plenary meeting of the current congress, the upcoming congress is presented and the location of the next but one selected.
The documentation and / or publication of each congress is also planned in the form of an (online) conference volume or a collection of materials that is to be distributed to the student representatives and forwarded to the KSK archive.

KSK archive in Hamburg
The KSK archive is the archive of the art history student congress. The student-organized project at the art history seminar at the University of Hamburg has been underway since 2010. The KSK archive collects all documents related to the history, organization and implementation of the KSK. In addition to the material preparation, the archive material is fed into a digital database over the long term.
The idea for an archive arose in the 1990s in the context of the scientific-historical discourse on a “ story from below ”. At the 73rd KSK in Berlin in 2007, it was decided to found an archive. A first collection of material in Marburg laid the foundation stone for the project, which was given a permanent location in Hamburg after the 77th KSK in 2009.
