Irma Stern (* 1894 in Schweizer-Reneke , South Africa ; † August 23, 1966 in Cape Town ) was a South African artist. Irma Stern's parents are the German-Jewish emigrants Samuel Stern and his wife Henny, b. Rock.

In 1913, Stern studied at the Weimar Academy , and in 1914 at the Levin-Funcke-Studio. From 1917 she had an artist friendship with Max Pechstein . Like him, she was a member of the November Group . Stern had her first exhibition in Berlin in 1919, and she had a total of almost 100 exhibitions in South Africa and Europe. She worked as a painter and also as a sculptor.

From 1920 Stern lived in Cape Town. In 1926 she married Dr. Johannes Prinz, who had been Professor of German Studies at the University of Cape Town since 1923. The divorce followed in 1934.

Irma Stern traveled extensively in Africa and Europe. Her works were also exhibited in Germany until 1933.

Appreciation

There has been an Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town since 1971.
