Schweizer-Reneke is a city in the South African province of Northwest ( North West ). It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Mamusa in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district .

geography

In 2011 Schweizer-Reneke had 41,226 inhabitants, most of them in the western township of Ipegeleng.

To the north of the city is the Wentzel Dam, a dam on the Harts River , which curves around the city center in the east.

history

Schweizer-Reneke was founded in 1888. It was named after the military officers CA Schweizer and CN Reneke, who were killed along with eight other attackers in 1885 when the nearby seat of Koranna leader David Massouw was attacked.

Economy and Transport

Mainly maize, sorghum , peanuts and sunflowers are grown around Schweizer-Reneke . Cattle and sheep breeding also plays an important role. Diamonds are mined on a small scale.

Schweizer-Reneke is on the R34 road , which connects Vryburg in the northeast and Bloemhof in the southeast. The city is also on the R504, which leads from Pudimoe in the west via Schweizer-Reneke to Wolmaransstad in the east, and the R506, which connects Delareyville in the north with Christiana in the southwest.

Schweizer-Reneke has a train station on the Coligny –Pudimoe line, which is used by freight. The Swiss Reneke Airport ( ICAO code FASG) is located northwest of the city and is not served by scheduled flights.
