Wolmaransstad is a city in the South African province of Northwest ( Northwest ). It is the administrative seat of the Maquassi Hills Community in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District .
geography
In 2011 Wolmaransstad, together with the neighboring townships Trotsville and Tswelelang, had 33,492 inhabitants. The city lies on the Makwasi River.
history
Wolmaransstad was founded in 1888 on the site of the Rooderand and Vlakfontein farms . It was named after Jacobus MA Wolmarans, a leading local politician at the time. In 1891 it received city rights.
Economy and Transport
Mainly maize is grown around Wolmaransstad. In the alluvial area diamonds are found.
Wolmaransstad is on the N12 , which connects Johannesburg via Klerksdorp in the northeast and Kimberley via Bloemhof in the southwest. The city is also on the R504, which leads from Schweizer-Reneke in the west to Meyerhof in the east, and the R505, which connects Ottosdal in the north with Wesselsbron in the south.
Wolmaransstad has a train station on the Makwassie - Vermaas route , which is used by freight. The Wolmaransstad Airport ( ICAO code FAWD) is located north of the city and is not served in regular service.
Attractions
- The church building of the Dutch Reformed Church was designed by Gerard Moerdyk, who also created the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria .
