Bloemhof is a city in the South African province of Northwest ( Northwest ). It is located in the municipality of Lekwa-Teemane in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district .

In 2011 Bloemhof, together with the north and northwestern townships Boitumelong and Coverdale, had 27,904 inhabitants. Boitumelong was reserved for blacks during apartheid , Coverdale for the Coloreds . The city lies on the Vaal , just below the dam of the Bloemhof Dam . The Vaal forms the border to the province of Free State here .

history

Bloemhof was founded in 1864 after diamonds were found nearby . It was named after the flower gardens of the former landowner's daughter, John Barclay. In 1869 Bloemhof became the seat of a district of the same name. In 1970, the Bloemhof Dam was inaugurated with its over 4000 meter long and 33 meter high dam. Severe flooding occurred in 2010 when the dam overflowed.

Agriculture is the main activity around Bloemhof.

Bloemhof is on the N12 , which connects Johannesburg via Wolmaransstad in the northeast and Kimberley via Christiana in the southwest. The city is also on the R34 , which leads from Schweizer-Reneke in the northwest to Hoopstad in the southeast and crosses the Vaal.

Bloemhof has a train station on the Kimberley – Johannesburg route, which is served by freight traffic. The Bloemhof Airport ( ICAO code FABK) is located north of the city and is not served in regular service.
