The Bloemhof Dam ( German  Bloemhof reservoir ; formerly Oppermansdrif Dam ) is a dam system in South Africa on the territory of the Free State and Northwest provinces near Bloemhof ; the dam is located east of the city. The reservoir is used as a water management system by the state-owned company Rand Water . It is around 223 km² in size and holds around 1,269,000,000 cubic meters of water. The dam wall is 4270 meters long because of the small differences in level, the central concrete overflow is 305 meters long. The mean water depth is 18 meters. The dam dams the water of the Vaal and the Vet .

Its construction began in the late 1960s and was completed in 1970.

The reservoir serves to supply the lower Vaal valley with water. Most of the water is used around 100 kilometers downstream in the Vaalharts Government Water Scheme , where around 37,000 hectares are artificially irrigated via the Vaalharts Storage Weir and a canal system . Around 17,000 hectares are irrigated in the vicinity of the reservoir along the Vaal. The climate is semi-arid , with annual rainfall around 470 millimeters and an estimated amount of evaporation of 1800 millimeters .

The nature reserves Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve (northwest, 250 km²) and Sandveld Nature Reserve (Free State, 370 km²) are located on the reservoir .
