Ali Haydar Saltık

Ali Haydar Saltık (* 1923 in Istanbul ; † April 8, 2011 ibid) was a Turkish general who was, among other things, Commander in Chief of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) from 1983 to 1985 and Ambassador to Switzerland between 1986 and 1989 .

Life

After attending the cadet institute in 1940, Saltık entered the military school ( Harp Okulu ) , which he graduated from in 1941 as an ensign (Asteğmen) . After further training at the artillery school, he found work in various artillery units and was ultimately battery chief . In 1952 he began his training at the Military Academy (Harp Akademisi) and then from 1955 worked as a staff officer in various army units and at the embassy in the USA .

In 1966 Saltık was promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) and appointed head of the training department of the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), a military alliance between Great Britain , Iraq , Iran , Pakistan and Turkey that existed until 1979 . He was then commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade between 1968 and 1970 . After his promotion to Major General (Tümgeneral) in 1970 he became Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army and then Commander of the School for Armored Forces (Zırhlı Birlikler Okulu) and Commander of the Training Division before he became head of the training department in the General Staff of Turkey . After he was promoted to lieutenant general (co- general ) in 1974 , he took over the function of head of the operations department of the general staff and then from 1976 to 1978 commander of the troops in Cyprus KTBK (Kıbrıs Türk Barış Kuvvetleri) .

Saltık was promoted to General (Orgeneral) on August 30, 1978 and took over as the successor of General Sedat Celasun as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri Genelkurmay II. Başkanları) . Two years later, on August 30, 1980, he succeeded General Ali Sait Özçivril as commander-in-chief of the Aegean Army (Ege Ordusu) with headquarters in Izmir and remained in this post until he was replaced by General Süreyya Yüksel on August 25, 1981. At the same time He was the successor of İlhan Öztrak after the military coup of September 12, 1980 , Secretary General of the President's Office (Türkiye Cumhurbaşkanlığı Genel Sekreterleri) and thus one of the closest employees of President Kenan Evren . His successor in this capacity was General Necdet Üruğ on August 27, 1981 .

On August 25, 1981 he again followed General Üruğ as commander in chief of the II., III. and V Corps existing 1st Army with headquarters in Istanbul and remained at this post until his replacement by General Necdet Öztorun on August 30, 1983. After he was from August 30 to December 6, 1983, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army he finally succeeded General Üruğ again on December 6, 1983 as the Army Commander-in-Chief (Türk Kara Kuvetleri) . His successor in this function was again General Öztorun on August 30, 1985.

In 1986, Saltık succeeded Özdemir Yiğit as ambassador to Switzerland and held this diplomatic post until he was replaced by Behiç Hazar in 1989.

Saltık, who was married with three children, died of complications from a myocardial infarction in the teaching hospital of the Military Medical Academy Gülhane GATA (Gülhane Askerî Tıp Akademisi) and was then buried in the Çengelköy cemetery in the Istanbul district of Üsküdar .
