Necdet Üruğ

Mustafa Necdet Üruğ (* 1921 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who was last chief of the general staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish armed forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvetleri ) from 1983 to 1987 .

Life

After attending the military academy of Bursa Üruğ resigned as an officer cadet in 1939 in the Military School ( Harp Okulu a) he 1941 as a warrant officer of artillery left. After attending the artillery school, he found uses in various military units between 1942 and 1948, before he graduated from the military academy ( Harp Akademisi ) from 1948 to 1950 . After its completion he was used as an officer and staff officer in various military units until 1966 .

In 1966, Üruğ was promoted to Brigadier General and was initially Deputy Secretary General of the National Security Council ( Millî Güvenlik Kurulu ) established after the military coup of May 27, 1960 , and then head of the Strategic Planning Department in the General Staff of Turkey . After he was promoted to major general in 1969 , he was commander of the weapons school ( Zırhlı Birlikler Okulu ) and the training division, before he was then military representative of Turkey in the NATO military committee and then head of the training department in the General Staff.

After his promotion to Lieutenant General in 1973, Üruğ became head of the Directorate for Planning and Guidelines in the General Staff and then took over the position of General Commanding XV. Corps.

In 1977 he was finally promoted to general and in 1978 took over the post of Commander-in-Chief of the 1st Army as the successor to Nurettin Ersin . He then became Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces ( Türk Kara Kuvvetleri ) on August 27, 1981 and was also Secretary General of the Liaison Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Council ( Millî Güvenlik Konseyi ) from August 27, 1981 to November 15, 1982 and then at the same time until July 1, 1983 Secretary General of the Liaison Office between the President and the National Security Council.

On July 1, 1983, General Üruğ succeeded General Ersin again, now as commander in chief of the land forces. When General Ersin retired a few months later on December 6, 1983 at his own request , General Üruğ finally followed him as Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

He held the post of Chief of Staff until his own retirement on July 2, 1987. He was succeeded in this office by General Necip Torumtay , who had previously also been Commander in Chief of the Land Forces,

His uncle was General Faruk Gürler , who was commander-in-chief of the land forces between 1970 and 1972 and then chief of the general staff until 1973.
