Life

After school, Baransel attended military school ( Harp Okulu ) and graduated in 1912 as a sub-lieutenant in the infantry . He then served as a platoon leader in the Balkan Wars and as a company commander in the First World War and entered the military academy ( Harp Akademisi ) as a graduate in 1919 . While still studying there, he was transferred to Anatolia because of the war of liberation and took part in various combat operations there. For his services there he was awarded the Independence Medal ( İstiklâl Madalyası ) and then continued his training at the Military Academy in 1923, which he graduated in 1925. After that it was used in various military units until 1939.

In 1939 he was promoted to brigadier general and appointed deputy commander of the 1st Cavalry Division. After his promotion to major general between 1941 and 1947, he was in succession in command of the 16th, 5th, 22nd and 17th divisions and, most recently, chief of staff in the 1st Army .

After he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1947 , he was initially commanding general of the VI. Corps and then the III. Corps and lastly Deputy Commander in Chief of the 3rd Army . In 1951 he was finally promoted to general and appointed commander-in-chief of the 3rd Army, before he succeeded Zekai Okan as commander-in-chief of the 1st Army between 1952 and 1954 .

On April 6, 1954, he was appointed as the successor to Şükrü Kanatlı to commander in chief of the land forces ( Türk Kara Kuvetleri ). He held this position until his appointment as Chief of the General Staff on May 28, 1954. However, he resigned from this office on August 25, 1955 and was replaced by General Hakkı Tunaboylu , who was previously deputy commander-in-chief of the land forces. Baransel himself became a member of the Supreme Military Council instead and was a member of this until his age-related retirement on July 14, 1960.

After his death, Nurettin Baransel was buried in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery in Istanbul. The "Nurettin-Baransel-Kaserne" in Maltepe , where the 2nd tank brigade is stationed, was named in his honor .
