Atilla Ateş

Atilla Ateş (* 1937 in Kastamonu , Kastamonu Province ) is a former Turkish general who, among other things, was the Army Commander-in-Chief (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) from 1998 to 2000 .

Life

Ateş came after attending the military academy (Işıklar Askeri Lisesi) in Bursa in 1955 in the Army School ( Harp Okulu ) , which he as 1957 Ensign (asteğmen) graduated. After attending the artillery school (Topçu Okulu) in 1959 he was first platoon leader and then battery chief in an artillery unit. After completing his training as a staff officer at the Army Academy (Harp Akademisi) in 1969, he found several posts in various units of the Army until 1982 and was most recently deputy military attaché at the embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany .

After being promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) in 1982, he initially remained at the embassy in the FRG as a military attaché and was then commander of the 3rd tank brigade in Çerkezköy between 1984 and 1986 . In 1986 he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and appointed commander of the 2nd infantry division before he was head of the logistics department in the Army High Command from 1988 to 1990.

In 1990 Ateş was promoted to lieutenant general (co- general ) as well as being appointed commanding general of the 4th Corps in Ankara . He was then the successor to Lieutenant General Hüseyin Karacaaslan from August 6, 1993 until his replacement by Lieutenant General Doğu Aktulga on August 22, 1994 Chief of Staff of the Army High Command.

After his promotion to general (Orgeneral) , Ateş succeeded General Kemal Yavuz as commander of the Army Academy on August 27, 1994 and remained in this position until he was replaced by General Necati Özgen on August 19, 1996. He followed on August 30 1996 General Teoman Koman as commander-in-chief of the VIII. And IX. Corps existing 3rd Army (Üçüncü Ordu) with the headquarters in Erzincan . He held this position until his replacement by General Nahit Şenoğul on August 26, 1997. He himself then succeeded General Hüseyin Kıvrıkoğlu as commander in chief of the II., III. 1st Army (Birinci Ordu) and V Corps , whose headquarters are in Selimiye Barracks (Selimiye Kışlası) in Istanbul's Üsküdar district . He remained in this position until August 18, 1998 and was then replaced by General Çevik Bir .

Most recently General Ateş was on August 27, 1998 Supreme Commander of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) and thus again successor to General Hüseyin Kıvrıkoğluvon. He held this position for two years until he retired and was then replaced on August 25, 2000 by General Hilmi Özkök .

Ateş, who speaks the German language , is widowed and has three children.
