İlker Başbuğ

Mehmet İlker Başbuğ (born April 29, 1943 in Afyonkarahisar , Turkey ) is a former Turkish general and from August 30, 2008 to August 30, 2010 Turkish Chief of Staff and thus the 26th commander of the Turkish armed forces since the end of the Ottoman Empire .

Life

Başbuğ said he was the son of immigrants from Bitola in the western Turkish province of Afyonkarahisar . His grandfather had migrated to Bitola from Karaman . 1961 İlker Başbuğ left the Turkish Army Academy as infantry - officer . Until 1970 he served in various units in the army. In 1973 he went to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons , Belgium , where he became, among other things, commander of the 247th Infantry Regiment of the 51st Infantry Brigade. From there he went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . In 1989 he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1993 to major general. Then he went back to SHAPE and stayed until 1995. This was followed by promotion to lieutenant general .

In 2002 he was appointed general and deputy army commander until he was appointed deputy chief of staff in 2003. From 2005 to 2006 he was the commander of the 1st Army and on August 30, 2008 he became Chief of Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. His predecessor yaşar büyükanıt went with the inauguration of Başbuğ in retirement . His successor in office was on August 8, 2010 Işık Koşaner .

On January 6, 2012, Başbuğ, who has been in retirement since August 30, 2010, was arrested on suspicion of setting up and running the Ergenekon organization and taken to Silivri prison. Başbuğ denied the allegations. In 2016 it was proven that the organization does not exist.

On August 5, 2013, Başbuğ was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in the prison complex . In an initial statement on his website, he stated that the nation would have the last word on this. After 26 months in prison, he was released on March 7, 2014 from the maximum security prison in Silivri .

Başbuğ is married and has two children.
