Ahmet Refik Yılmaz

Ahmet Refik Yılmaz (* 1904 in Istanbul ; † February 21, 1986 ibid) was a Turkish general who was among other things commander in chief of the army (Türk Kara Kuvetleri) between 1966 and 1968 .

Life

After attending school, Yılmaz completed an officer training at the Army School ( Kara Harp Okulu ) , which he completed in 1925 as an ensign (Asteğmen) . He then found employment as a platoon leader of an infantry unit and began his training as a staff officer at the Army Academy ( Kara Harp Akademisi ) in 1932 , which he finished in 1935. After that he was an officer and staff officer in numerous units until 1954.

After his promotion to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) in 1954, Yılmaz was first commander of the 8th Division and then in 1955 commander of the reserve officer school (Yedeksubay Okulu) . In 1956 he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and appointed commander of the Army Academy before he later became commander of the 10th Division. In 1959 he was promoted to lieutenant general (co- general ) and took over the function of commanding general of the VIII. Corps and then as deputy commander in chief of the 2nd Army (İkinci Ordu) .

On June 23, 1961 Yilmaz was promoted to general (Orgeneral) and took over as the successor of General Celal Alkoç as Commander in Chief of the 3rd Army (Üçüncü Ordu) . He stayed in this post until September 25, 1962, when he was replaced by General Refik Tulga . He himself then succeeded General Cemal Tural as Commander-in-Chief of the 1st Army (Birinci Ordu) on September 25, 1962 and held this office until he was replaced by General Memduh Tağmaç on March 19, 1966 .

Most recently, General Yılmaz succeeded General Cemal Tural again on March 21, 1966, now as the Army Commander-in-Chief (Turk Kara Kuvetleri) . He held this position until he retired on August 16, 1968 and was then replaced again on August 23, 1968 by General Memduh Tağmaç.

Yılmaz, who was married with one child, was buried in the Karacaahmet Cemetery (Karacaahmet Mezarlığı) in Istanbul after his death .
