Nazmi Karakoç

Nazmi Karakoç (* 1909 in Bolu , Bolu Province ; † January 21, 1980 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who, among other things, was Supreme Commander of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) from 1969 to 1970 .

Life

After attending school, Karakoç graduated from the Army School ( Harp Okulu ) and graduated in 1929 as an ensign (Asteğmen) . In 1930 he graduated from the Infantry School (Piyade Okulu) and was then a platoon leader and company commander . In 1941 he began his training as a staff officer at the Army Academy ( Harp Akademisi ) , which he completed in 1944. He then found numerous uses as an officer and staff officer in various military units.

After his promotion to brigadier general (Tuğgeneral) in 1957, he was first the first deputy commander of the 1st Gendarmerie - Division and then in 1958 Head of the Operations Division of the 2nd Army (İkinci Ordu) before he was from 1959 to 1960 deputy commander of the 28th Division . In 1960 he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and became deputy commanding general of the VII Corps.

As early as 1961, Karakoç was promoted to lieutenant general (corgeneral) . At first he was still deputy commanding general of the VII. Corps, before he succeeded Brigadier General Zeki İlter as Chief of Staff of the Army High Command on August 8, 1962 . He held this position for almost four years until July 19, 1966 and was then replaced on August 4, 1966 by Lieutenant General Faruk Gürler . He himself then became deputy commander in chief of the 2nd Army.

On August 28, 1967 he was eventually succeeded General Kemalettin Gökakın as commander of the 2nd Army and remained in that post until his replacement by new General Gürler on August 29, 1969. During this time he also became General (Orgeneral) promoted .

Most recently, General Karakoç succeeded General Fikret Esen as Supreme Commander of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) on August 28, 1969 and retained this function until he retired on August 30, 1970. His successor was again General Faruk Gürler.

Karakoç was married and the father of two children and was buried after his death in Istanbul's Karacaahmet Cemetery (Karacaahmet Mezarlığı) .
