Semih Sancar

Semih Sancar (* 1911 in Erzurum , Erzurum Province ; † December 8, 1984 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who was last chief of the general staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish armed forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri ) from 1973 to 1978 .

Life

After attending the Kuleli Cadet Institute , Sancar graduated from military school ( Harp Okulu ) between 1930 and 1932 , which he left as an officer candidate for the artillery . After graduating from the artillery school, he was used as an officer in various artillery units between 1934 and 1939 . In 1939 he entered the military academy ( Harp Akademisi ) as a graduate and graduated in 1942. He then worked as an officer and staff officer in various military units until 1960 .

After his promotion to Brigadier General , Sancar became Commander in Chief of the 4th Division in 1960 and was then head of the personnel department and finally head of the operations department in the General Staff of Turkey .

In 1963 he was promoted to major general and appointed acting commander of the military academy. Shortly afterwards he was acting commanding general of the V Corps and finally head of the operations department of the land forces ( Türk Kara Kuvvetleri ).

In 1964 Sancar was promoted to lieutenant general and was first commanding general of the training corps of the land forces and then commanding general of the 9th Corps in Yakutiye .

After his promotion to general he succeeded General Kemal Atalay chief of the General Command of the Gendarmerie ( Jandarma ) on August 29, 1969 and held this position for a year until he was replaced by General Kemalettin Eken on August 28, 1970. He became himself then commander in chief of the 2nd Army , before he became commander in chief of the land forces for the first time on August 28, 1972.

On March 6, 1973 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces and thus succeeded General Faruk Gürler . He held the post of Chief of Staff for five years until he was replaced by General Kenan Evren , the previous Commander in Chief of the Land Forces, on March 7, 1978. General Sancar also acted as Commander in Chief from June 1 to July 18 1977 again from.

After his death he was buried in the Cebeci cemetery .
