The Turkish General Staff ( Turkish Genelkurmay Başkanlığı ) is in command of the armed forces in the Republic of Turkey . The official name is "Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Genelkurmay Başkanlığı" ( German General Staff of the Republic of Turkey ).  

History and structure

The Commander-in-Chief is the Chief of Staff (Genelkurmay Başkanı). According to Article 117, Paragraph 4 of the Constitution, the President is appointed by the Council of Ministers. Traditionally, the chief of the army is appointed chief of staff. The Turkish General Staff is responsible to the Prime Minister. Its tasks are regulated by law. The chief of staff is a member of the National Security Council .

The General Staff is based in Ankara . The original official seat was designed by the architect Clemens Holzmeister . The name at that time was Erkan-ı Harbiye . The first chief of staff was İsmet İnönü . The incumbent is Yaşar Guler .

Both the 1971 military coup and the 1980 military coup came directly from the Turkish General Staff. Erbakan's government was also forced to resign by the General Staff . The last attempted undisguised influence on politics came with the so-called E-Putsch in 2007.
