Cemal Tural

A. Cemal Tural (* 1905 in Erzincan , Erzincan Province ; † December 17, 1981 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who was last chief of the general staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish armed forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvetleri ) from 1966 to 1969 .

Life

After attending the Kuleli Cadet Institute , Tural entered the military school ( Harp Okulu ) in 1923 , which he left in 1925 with the rank of sub-lieutenant . He then served in the Guard of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey before he graduated from the Military Academy ( Harp Akademisi ) in 1930 . After graduation, he served for more than twenty years as an officer and staff officer in various military units.

In 1954 Tural was promoted to brigadier general and was initially deputy commander of the 57th division and then chief of the personnel department of the 1st Army . After his promotion to major general in 1956 he was first deputy chief of the operations department of the general staff , then deputy chief for planning and operations of the general staff and finally commander of the 66th division.

After Tural was promoted to lieutenant general in 1959 , he first acted as commanding general of the II. Corps and then as the commanding general of the VII. Corps before he was deputy commander in chief of the 1st Army .

On August 1, 1960 he succeeded General Muzaffer Alankuş as Commander-in-Chief of the 1st Army and as such was promoted to General in 1961. In 1964 he followed General Refik Tulga as Commander-in-Chief of the 2nd Army after a period of one year in another position and was then Supreme Commander of the Land Forces as the successor to General Mehmet Ali Keskiner from August 22, 1964 until his replacement by General Ahmet Refik Yılmaz on March 16, 1966 ( Türk Kara Kuvetleri ).

On March 16, 1966, Tural took over the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces as the successor to General Cevdet Sunay , who became President . On March 16, 1969, he was released from his position as chief of staff and replaced by the previous commander-in-chief of the land forces, General Memduh Tağmaç . Instead, he became a member of the Supreme Military Council, before he in on August 16, 1969 retirement was adopted.

After his death, he was buried in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery .
