Namık Kemal Ersun

Namık Kemal Ersun (* 1915 in Istanbul ; † December 31, 1988 ibid) was a general of the Turkish Armed Forces (Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri) who, among other things, was Secretary General of the National Security Council ( Millî Güvenlik Kurulu ) between 1975 and 1976 and commander from 1976 to 1977 of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvetleri) was.

Life

After attending the cadet institution (Askeri Lisesi) in Işıklar in 1932, Ersun entered the Army School ( Harp Okulu ) , from which he graduated in 1935 as an ensign (Asteğmen) . After graduating from the artillery school in 1937, he found use in various artillery units before he finally became battery boss himself . In 1941 he began his training at the Army Academy ( Harp Akademisi ) , which he graduated in 1944. In the following years he served as an officer and staff officer in numerous units, such as in Afghanistan, until 1962 .

In 1962 Ersun was promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) and was initially deputy commander of the 33rd Infantry Division and then from 1963 to 1964 deputy commander of the Army School. After his promotion to major general (Tümgeneral) , he served as the commander of the army school between 1964 and 1967.

After Ersun was promoted to lieutenant general (co- general ) in 1967 , he initially took over the function of commanding general of the training corps (Eğitim Kolordu) and was then chairman of the military history commission at the general staff. In 1972 he was promoted to general (orgeneral) and appointed martial law administrator (Sıkıyönetim Komutanı) in Ankara and a member of the Supreme Military Council. On August 28, 1974, he succeeded General Hamza Gürgüç as Commander-in-Chief of the 3rd Army and held this position until he was replaced by General Ali Fethi Esener on March 29, 1976. At the same time he succeeded General Nahit Özgür as Secretary General of the National Security Council ( Millî Güvenlik Kurulu ) on August 24, 1975 and remained in this post until he was replaced by General Nurettin Ersin on January 5, 1976.

Most recently, General Ersun was appointed commander of the army (Türk Kara Kuvetleri) on March 29, 1976 , and thus succeeded General Eşref Akıncı . He held this post as commander-in-chief of the land forces until his retirement on June 1, 1977, after which he was replaced by General Semih Sancar .

After his death, Ersun, the father of two children, was buried in the Silivrikapı Cemetery (Silivrikapı Mezarlığı) in Istanbul.
