Necdet Öztorun

Necdet Öztorun (* 1924 in Konya ; † October 7, 2010 in Ankara ) was a Turkish general and most recently commander of the land forces .

biography

After attending school, he joined the armed forces in 1941 and was a graduate of the Military College ( Işıklar Askeri Hava Lisesi ) and a gunner during the Second World War . Subsequently, in 1943 he began an officer training at the military school ( Kara Harp Okulu ) and then training at the tank school ( Topçu Sınıf Okulu ). In 1959 he was a graduate of the Military Academy ( Kara Harp Akademisi ).

In 1967 he was promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) and appointed commander of the 33rd Infantry Brigade . After serving in the general staff, he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) in 1972 and was subsequently commander of the 51st Infantry Division and head of strategy and planning in the general staff of Turkey .

In 1976 he became lieutenant general (co- general ) and was first commanding general of the 6th Corps and then of the 2nd Corps. After his promotion to general (orgeneral) he was first deputy chief of staff and then commander of the 1st Army in Istanbul - Üsküdar .

On August 12, 1985, he succeeded Ali Haydar Saltık as Commander of the Land Forces ( Türk Kara Kuvetleri Komutanları ) and held this position until his retirement on July 2, 1987. He was succeeded by General Necip Torumtay , who also became Chief of Staff .

Previously, there was speculation that the the General Staff favored Öztorun'd Chief of General Staff itself. Prime Minister Turgut Özal preferred General Torumtay as the successor to the previous Chief of Staff Necdet Üruğ .

Numerous high-ranking generals such as Chief of Staff Işık Koşaner took part in the funeral ceremonies .
