Nuri Yamut

Mehmet Nuri Yamut (* 1890 in Thessaloniki ; † June 5, 1961 ) was a Turkish general who was last chief of the general staff ( Genelkurmay Başkanı ) of the Turkish armed forces ( Türk Silahlı Kuvetleri ) from 1950 to 1954 .

Life

Yamut first attended military school ( Harp Okulu ), which he graduated as a lieutenant in 1908 . In the following years he was an officer in the 50th Regiment of the 3rd Corps and was taken prisoner during the Balkan Wars in 1912 . After his release from captivity, he graduated from the military academy ( Harp Akademisi ) between 1913 and 1914 , although he had to interrupt the training there because of his participation in the First World War .

After the end of the First World War, he continued his staff training at the military academy in 1919 and completed it in 1920. He then remained a member of the armed forces and in the following years found uses until 1935 as an officer and staff officer in military units in Anatolia and Afghanistan . In the early days he took part in the War of Liberation and was awarded the Independence Medal ( İstiklâl Madalyası ) for his services there .

In 1935 he was promoted to brigadier general and commanded a brigade in the 9th Division . After his subsequent promotion to major general in 1936, he was first in command of the 9th Division and then the 57th Division.

After he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1939 , he was first commanding general of the II. Corps and then the XII. Corps before he was promoted to general in 1945. As such he was initially Commander in Chief of the 2nd Army and then from 1946 to 1949 of the 1st Army .

On January 3, 1949, General Yamut became the first commander-in-chief of the land forces ( Türk Kara Kuvvetleri ) and held this position until he was replaced by General Kurtcebe Noyan on June 6, 1950. He was also between July 1, 1949 and June 6, 1950 also deputy chief of staff.

He then succeeded General Nafiz Gürman as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces on June 6, 1950 . He remained in this office until he retired on April 10, 1950. He was succeeded as Chief of Staff by the previous Commander in Chief of the Land Forces, Nurettin Baransel .

In the parliamentary elections on September 27, 1957 , Yamut was elected a member of the Grand National Assembly and represented a constituency of Istanbul until the military coup on May 27, 1960 .

After his death he was buried in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery in Istanbul .
