Mehmet Yaşar Büyükanıt (born September 1, 1940 in Istanbul ; † November 21, 2019 there ) was the Turkish Chief of Staff from August 2006 to July 2008 . He was the 25th Army Commander since the end of the Ottoman Empire . His successor as Chief of Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces was İlker Başbuğ since August 16, 2008 .

Life

Büyükanıt graduated from the military high school in Erzincan in 1959 and the Academy of Land Forces in 1961 before attending the infantry school until 1963 . His family is from Gaziantep. Between 1983 and 1986 he was in command of the Kuleli elite military high school in Istanbul. From 1986 to 1988 he commanded the Presidential Guard. In 1992 he was promoted to the rank of general. As a general he was first general secretary to the chief of staff, then for three years the commander of the military academy. From August 30, 2003 to August 30, 2004 Büyükanıt was Commander in Chief of the Turkish 1st Army . From 2004 until his appointment as Chief of Staff, he was in command of theLand Forces .

Büyükanıt was married to Filiz Büyükanıt and has a daughter with her.

Büyükanıt was awarded medals from the following countries: Turkey , Italy , USA , Pakistan .
