Elisabeth Françoise Eybers (born February 16, 1915 in Klerksdorp ; † December 1, 2007 in Amsterdam ) was a South African - Dutch poet . She wrote in Afrikaans and received numerous Dutch and South African literary awards. She is considered to be the first woman to become known for poetry written in Afrikaans.

Life

Eybers grew up as the daughter of a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa in Schweizer-Reneke . After graduating from high school , she studied at the University of Witwatersrand and earned a Bachelor of Arts cum laude . She worked as a journalist and married the businessman Albert Wessels, with whom she had three daughters and a son. It belonged to the movement of the Dertigers ("Thirties"), which had set itself the goal of renewing Afrikaans literature. The themes of her poems are mostly life as a woman and as a mother.

As early as 1943 she received the Hertzogprys for poetry, the most important prize for literature in Afrikaans. She won the award again in 1971; further prizes followed in South Africa and the Netherlands, where she was awarded the prestigious PC-Hooft-Prijs in 1991 . A few months before her death, she received the South African Order of Ikhamanga in gold.

In 1961 she divorced and took Dutch citizenship . Until his death in 1994 she lived with the Dutch economist Pieter Hennipman, for whom she moved to Amsterdam and whom she married in 1974.
