The Christophstraße / Mediapark underground station is a station of the Cologne Stadtbahn below the rings at the intersection with the eponymous Christophstraße . The name affix refers to the Mediapark project area outside the rings on the site of the former Cologne Gereon freight station .
history
As early as the 1880s, a horse-drawn tram operated on the Kölner Ringen, which branched off on Christophstrasse towards the city center. With the electrification between 1900 and 1903, both routes became part of the Cologne tram . Since the rings were laid out as a wide boulevard in the course of the former city wall, the tram was given its own track body as early as the 1920s in the course of increasing car traffic. After the destruction of World War II, the remaining branch line in Christophstraße was the only tram connection to the main train station . The line retained this great importance until it was closed in 1968, when it was replaced by the new inner city tunnel, which ended a little south at Friesenplatz. Since 1974 the ring route has also been partly underground, the tunnel coming from the Hansaring ended in a ramp on Christophstraße.
In the 1980s, the rings U-Bahn was finally extended to Zülpicher Platz, in the course of which a simple through station was built on Christophstraße, which was opened on October 31, 1987.
layout
The three stations of the Rings U-Bahn were the last to be built in the style typical of Cologne up to that point: 35 centimeter high side platforms, entrances that end on platforms 90 centimeters above the track and large-area tiled walls. However, approaches of artistic design were integrated for the first time: The Christophstraße / Mediapark station received some wall decorations on brick, which are intended to remind of the city wall and the Gereon city gate.
The underground station is one of the few in Cologne that does not have a mezzanine, both platform entrances end in a pavilion in the wide green belt of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring. There are two floors of an underground car park above the platform level , which are connected to the stop and the street surface by elevators.
City sprinter accident
On August 23, 1999 at 5:41 p.m., the most serious accident in the recent history of the Cologne light rail occurred in the Christophstraße / Mediapark underground station. The Siemens Citysprinter 5001 , which was being tested in operation , hit a train standing in the station without braking . 67 people were injured, seven of them seriously.
Due to a failure of the on-board electronics, the vehicle could no longer be controlled and had previously unplanned through the Hansaring underground station without stopping. The vehicle ran over a red signal, but the automatic emergency braking did not respond, nor did the emergency brake in the passenger compartment. Due to the gradient between the two stations, the vehicle accelerated even further, so that an impact speed of between 50 and 60 km / h is assumed.
The use of the Citysprinter in Cologne ended with the accident; a second prototype that had already been completed was no longer accepted by the Cologne transport company . The wreck of the 2197 light rail vehicle , which was destroyed by the city sprinter , was bought by a production company that used it as a location for the television film “The Explosion - Subway Ticket to Death”.
