Cathy McMorris Rodgers (born May 22, 1969 in Salem , Oregon ) is an American politician . She is a member of the Republican Party and since 2005 deputy for the 5th congressional district of Washington in the United States House of Representatives .

biography

Cathy McMorris Rodgers was born and raised on a farm. For 13 years she worked for the family business Peachcrest Fruit Basket Orchard in Kettle Falls . McMorris Rodgers is a descendant of American pioneers who came to the Pacific Northwest via the Oregon Trail in the early 1850s , where her father's family worked in agriculture and her mother's family in forestry.

McMorris Rodgers graduated from Pensacola Christian College with a BA in Pre-Law in 1990 . In 2002 she received her Masters of Business Administration from the University of Washington . She was the 7th constituency representative in the Washington House of Representatives from 1994 to 2004 . There she held the position of House Republican Leader from 2002-2003 (group leader of the Republicans).

In the 2004 congressional elections , she was elected as her party's candidate for the US House of Representatives, where she took up her new mandate on January 3, 2005. As she was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, she can continue to exercise her mandate today. Her latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. From 2009 to 2013 she was the Republican Conference Vice-Chair . She has chaired this organization since 2013. She has since been a member of the Armed Forces Committee , the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Education and Labor . She later became a member of the Energy and Trade Committee .

In December 2016, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would bring Rodgers to his cabinet as Secretary of the Interior . However, the position was awarded to Ryan Zinke , who led the office until the end of 2018.

On August 5, 2006, Cathy McMorris married former Navy commander Brian Rodgers. Their son Cole was born on April 29, 2007. That made her the fifth woman in history to have a baby while serving as Congressman. The child was diagnosed with Down syndrome . McMorris Rodgers is an Evangelical Christian .
