Career
Born on a farm, Fred Norman attended public schools in his home country including Martinsville High School . In 1901 he moved to Lebam, Washington state. There he worked until 1921 as a farmer, lumberjack, in sawmills or in shipyards. Since 1922 he worked in the tobacco and confectionery trade. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party .
Between 1916 and 1918 he was a member of the Raymond Parish Council ; from 1919 to 1920 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Washington . He was then a member of the State Senate between 1925 and 1935 . In the 1942 congressional elections , Norman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the third constituency of his state, where he succeeded Democrat Martin F. Smith on January 3, 1943 . Since he was not confirmed in 1944, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1945 . This was shaped by the events of the Second World War . In 1946 , Norman was able to win back his seat in the House of Representatives and replace the Democrat Charles R. Savage , who had succeeded him two years earlier. Norman's tenure began on January 3, 1947. He died a few months later, on April 18 of the same year, and was buried in Menlo .
