William Humphrey

William Ewart Humphrey (born March 31, 1862 at Alamo , Montgomery County , Indiana , †  February 14, 1934 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1917 he represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Humphrey attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1887, he began to work in Crawfordsville in his new profession. In 1893, Humphrey moved to Seattle , Washington state, where he continued his legal practice. Between 1898 and 1902 he was the city's legal advisor.

Politically, Humphrey joined the Republican Party . In the state-wide congressional elections held in 1902, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC for the then newly created third mandate of the State of Washington. There he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1903, which he was able to hold until March 3, 1909 after two re-elections. In the elections of 1908, according to the constituencies were held, Humphrey was to succeed in the first district of his state Wesley Livsey Jones again elected to the US House of Representatives. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1917 . In total, he completed seven consecutive legislative periods there between 1903 and 1917. During this time, the 16th and 17th amendments to the constitution were passed.

In 1916, Humphrey renounced a possible re-election to the House of Representatives in favor of a then unsuccessful candidacy for the US Senate . In the following years he worked again as a lawyer in Seattle. In February 1925, he was appointed to the Federal Trade Commission by President Calvin Coolidge . He remained there until his dismissal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in September 1933. Humphrey took this measure to court and was ruled in 1935 - albeit posthumously, as he had already died on February 14, 1934 in the federal capital, Washington. He was buried in Crawfordsville.
