The necessity arose after the Second World War, initially with regard to the displaced persons who, due to the turmoil of the war and post-war conditions, had insufficient school education or could not afford a higher education for financial reasons . Political aspects were added later. The regulated education system of the GDR blocked some people, regardless of their performance, the way to study. The initially 4-year, from 1967 with the introduction of the 10-class school 3-year training was based on the Prussian school regulations of 1923 (revision 1951), so that it could be seen as a humanistic Abitur with the ancient languages Greek and Latin , which are in the GDR was not recognized, but it was in the west of the country. From 1952 to the 1988/89 school year, 1009 men began their training in 38 years. About half were ordained priests.

The turning point brought the recognition of the Norbertuswerk, the opening for all high school graduates and at the same time the renaming to Kolleg Norbertinum . Declining admission numbers led to the closure on July 10, 1999.

With the help of the Bonifatiuswerk , the operation of the Konviktes in Magdeburg's Sieverstorstrasse 51 was ensured, where the theology aspirants lived and learned at the same time.
