Johannes Michael Schnarrer (born July 14, 1965 in Sohland an der Spree , † March 16, 2008 in Vienna ) was a German social ethicist .

Life

Schnarrer trained as a cabinet maker and cabinet maker from 1982 to 1984. After graduating from the Studienkolleg Norbertinum in Magdeburg in 1987, he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University until 1992, also known as the Philosophical-Theological Studies in Erfurt (now the fourth faculty of the University of Erfurt ) . From 1992 to 1994 he studied and researched at the American Weston Jesuit School of Theology and Harvard University , where he obtained a licentiate in theology. This was followed by a degree in political science and ethnology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and an assistant position at the Institute for Ethics and Social Sciences of the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1996 he was at the University of Vienna with a thesis in the field of ethics , moral theology and social sciences Doctor of Theology (Honors) PhD . In 1997 he became Associate Professor for the subject of social ethics at the "Seminarul Teologic Romano-Catolic" in Alba Iulia (Karlsburg), Romania . In 1998 Schnarrer received his doctorate in philosophy with distinction.

He was initially private secretary for the former Austrian Federal Minister of Finance Wolfgang Schmitz (ÖVP), from 1999 to 2000 political advisor at Dr. Karl Kummer Institute in Vienna, from 2000 to 2001 he was director of the project "Identity and Integration in Europe" at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs and then until 2004 project director at the Lower Austrian State Academy St. Pölten , Institute for Ethics in Science .

Since 2005 Schnarrer has worked as a scientific policy advisor, economic advisor and book author. In addition to his professorship in Karlsberg, he was a Hoover Fellow at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , lecturer and guest lecturer at numerous universities.

In 2008 he succumbed to severe cancer and was buried at the Gersthofer cemetery . He left a wife and two children.

Act

Schnarrer stood in the tradition of the natural law teacher Johannes Messner , whose findings he sought - in collaboration with Rudolf Weiler and Alfred Klose - to apply to the challenges of the present. In this context, he also dealt intensively with the social philosopher Karl Lugmayer and participated in an interdisciplinary research project on Lugmayer's work coordinated by Erwin Bader . Schnarrer published nine books and numerous scientific papers.

He was vice president of Initiative Global Ethic Austria (WIO), Scientific Advisory Board of the Gorres Society , Ethics Advisory Board of the bank Schellhammergasse & Schattera, also a member of the Societas Ethica , the Association for the Promotion of Christian Social Ethics and the Messner Society .
