Rudolf Weiler (born March 12, 1928 in Vienna ) is an Austrian , Roman Catholic theologian , social ethicist and priest .

Life

Weiler was born the son of a post office manager. In 1946 he graduated with distinction and entered the Vienna seminary . He studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna and was ordained a priest in 1951 by Cardinal Theodor Innitzer . Weiler initially worked as a priest in the Archdiocese of Vienna and as chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Apostolic Work Church and Sport .

In 1953 he was at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna to Dr. theol. PhD . In 1954 he began to study political science at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna, in 1961 he was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD. In 1964 he received a teaching position at the chair for ethics and social sciences, in the same year he completed his habilitation on November 18 with Johannes Messner with the habilitation thesis "Economic cooperation in a pluralistic society". In 1964 he also received the Cardinal Innitzer Prize .

In 1966 Rudolf Weiler became an associate . University professor for ethics and social sciences at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna appointed and released from parish service. In 1966 he was also founding director of the Institute for Social Ethics at the University of Vienna. In 1968 he was appointed full university professor. 1970/1971 he was Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty.

In 1967 the University Center for Peace Research (UZF) was founded at the faculty with a focus on peace ethics and international ethics, of which Weiler was the first chairman for many years. He cooperated in particular with the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 1996 he was at the University of Vienna emeritus . From 1995 to 2003 he worked as an honorary professor at the Philosophical-Theological University in St. Pölten (PTH) ; since 2000 he has been teaching at the Pontifical Philosophical-Theological College Benedict XVI. in Heiligenkreuz .

Rudolf Weiler has been Honorary Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Religion and Peace at the Austrian Military Ordinary since 1999 and 2001 . He was a full member of the Vienna Catholic Academy.

Weiler was president of the Johannes Messner Society for many years and since 1951 a member of the Catholic student association ÖKAV Rhaeto-Danubia in Vienna in the ÖCV .

He is editor of the series of publications of the Institute for Ethics and Social Sciences and has published numerous works.
