Emil Pümpin
Emil Pümpin (born September 4, 1840 in Sissach , † July 22, 1898 in Geneva ) was a Swiss railway engineer .
Emil Pümpin was the son of Moritz Pümpin, Löwenwirt in Sissach, and Elisabeth Gysin von Buckten (Restaurant Mond). In 1872 he married Fanny Burtin, daughter of an officer from France. They had eight children.
Vocational training
As a young boy, Emil still experienced the great stagecoach and wagon traffic on the Hauenstein route. Many wagoners and travelers stopped in his parents' inn. Travel and goods traffic fascinated him.
After primary school in Sissach and the district school in Böckten, he learned a locksmith and attended the trade school in Basel . After a few years of professional work in the machine factory "Kussmaul" in Basel, he studied at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe and graduated in 1862 with a diploma. Mechanical engineer. He then worked for engineer Richard Wieland in Freiburg CH. There he made his first professional experience in the construction and operation of railways in western Switzerland from 1862–68 and in Algeria from 1868–71.
He became an inspector and depot manager in Switzerland. Westbahn 1871–73 and control engineer at the Federal. Railway Department 1873–75. Then head of operation of the Tösstalbahn 1875–79 and course inspector at the Federal. Post Department 1879–81.
Entrepreneur
In 1881 he and the engineer Merian built the Travers – St. Sulpice for the Chemin de fer Régional du Val-de-Travers . In 1883 he founded the Bernische Baugesellschaft für Spezialbahnen Pümpin & Herzog together with engineer Hans Herzog . They planned and built the following railways:
- Regional trains: Tavannes-Tramelan / Bière-Apples-Morges / Apples-l´Isle
- Cable cars : Marzilibahn / Biel-Magglingen-Bahn / Thunersee-Beatenberg-Bahn
- Narrow-gauge railways: Basel – Rodersdorf / Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn / Bernese Oberlandbahn / Sissach-Gelterkinden-Bahn (second electric railway in Switzerland)
- Rack railways: Wengernalpbahn (Lauterbrunnen – Grindelwald) / Schynige Platte Railway
- Normal railway along Lake Thun
