The Marzili-Stadt Bern cable car ( DMB ), or Marzilibahn for short , is a funicular in Switzerland . It connects the on the Aare located Marziliquartier with the higher old town , the center of Bern . The valley station is located on Weihergasse, the mountain station on the federal terrace between the Bundeshaus and the Bernerhof .
history
The railway was built by the Bernische Baugesellschaft für Spezialbahnen, Pümpin, Herzog & Cie. built and put into operation on July 18, 1885. Construction began on March 15th and therefore only lasted four months. In its first year of operation, the Marzilibahn carried around 100,000 people. From 1885 to 1973 it was a water ballast railway , a tank at the mountain station was filled with water from the Stadtbach , whereupon the heavier upper cabin pulled the lower cabin together with the passengers up the slope while sliding down.
In 1914 the system was overhauled for the national exhibition . In the process, new wagons were procured that initially carried 18 people and later even 30 people due to an additional water tank. The valley station was renovated in 1944, and the mountain station was roofed five years later. In 1973/74 the railway was completely renewed, since then it has been operated electrically. One of the old brown water ballast wooden wagons was set up not far from the valley station, another in the Swiss Museum of Transport .
The height difference of the railway is 32 meters with a length of 105 meters. After the Zagreb funicular, it is the second shortest public funicular in Europe with a length of 66 meters. The maximum speed is 3 m / s. A trip takes around a minute.
On September 28, 2014, operations were stopped in order to renew the runway. The wagons and the steel bridge were removed. In the course of the construction work it became clear that the slope is unstable and the new bridge has to be re-fixed up to 10 meters deep. This increased the renovation costs from 5 to 6 million CHF and the construction work lasted until April 2015.
