The Zagreb funicular ( Croatian: Zagrebačka uspinjača ) is operated by the municipal transport company Zagrebački električni tramvaj (ZET), which is also responsible for the local tram and the city bus network .

description

The “Uspinjača” begins in Tomić Street, a cul-de-sac from the Ilica pedestrian zone in the lower town (Donji Grad). It ends at Strossmayerovo šetalište (the Strossmayer promenade) in the Zagreb upper town (Gornji Grad). At 30.5 meters in altitude and 66 meters in length, the Uspinjača is one of the shortest public transport funiculars in the world. The cable car was built from 1890 and put into operation on April 23, 1893. At first it was operated with steam engines , from 1934 with electric motors. A significant modernization of the drive and the cabins as well as large parts of the system took place in 1974. The Uspinjača with its structures and most of the technical equipment are protected as a cultural monument.

Technical specifications

The funicular has two cabins for 28 passengers each (16 seats and twelve standing places). A cabin is 5.64 meters long, has an unladen weight of 5050 kilograms and can carry a payload of 2240 kilograms. The electric motor in the northern (upper) station has an output of 28.5 kW and works with 400 volts direct current at 720 revolutions per minute. The funicular runs on rails with a track width of 1200 millimeters, which are only 66 meters long, but overcome a height difference of 30.5 meters and thus have an incline of 52 percent. The Zagreb funicular is one of the shortest and steepest in the world. It runs at a speed of 1.5 m / s (5.4 km / h) and takes 55 seconds to travel from the lower to the upper town.
