The Zagreb tram is the tram system of the Croatian capital Zagreb and is operated by the municipal transport company Zagrebački električni tramvaj (ZET). This is also responsible for the local funicular railway and the city bus service. The Zagreb tram, along with the Osijek tram, is one of two systems in the country.
history
The Zagreb tram was opened as a horse-drawn tram on September 5, 1891 . The first route was eight kilometers long and had a track width of 760 millimeters. This so-called Bosnian gauge was widespread in the Balkans . It was converted to meter gauge in the course of electrification in 1910 . Operations were resumed on August 18, 1910 with the Ganz company from Budapest . Since then, the network has developed continuously and is now served by 15 lines . In 1950 a mountain route to Gračani and Gračansko Dolje was opened, which was completely separated from individual traffic and has retained its overland character to this day. From there it has been possible to continue up the Sljeme by cable car since 1963 . Another, almost 1 km long stretch with an even steeper gradient connected Gupčeva zvijezda with Mirogoj (main cemetery) since 1911. On October 31, 1954, a serious accident occurred on this route when the brakes failed on a car. The car derailed and overturned. There were 19 dead and 37 injured. In addition, parts of the car were severely damaged. As a result, traffic on this route was stopped on the same day and only reopened in 1964. In 1967 it was closed again due to a lack of railcars. Finally in 1971 the tracks and overhead lines were dismantled.
In 1979 the first tram connection was created across the Save ; From now on, the satellite town of Novi Zagreb south of the river also had a connection to the Zagreb tram network. Since 1985 the tram has crossed the Sava at a second point, at Jadranski most.
Extensions to the Malešnica and Stupnik districts are planned. In addition, some new routes in the city center and in Novi Zagreb as well as a third connection across the Sava. These expansions should be completed by 2013.

At least two lines run from all endpoints (except Dolje). There are also four night lines (31 to 34) that run roughly every half hour every night between 0:00 and 4:30 a.m. Line 34 is operated every 34 minutes.

vehicles
After ZET had used vehicles from its own (1922–1954 - around a hundred two-axle railcars and over 70 two-axle sidecars in its own workshop) and local (Unternehmenuro Đaković company 1957–1974, and an articulated car prototype 1992) production, the decision was made but from 1976 onwards for vehicles from the Czechoslovak company ČKD Tatra . All of these vehicles are still in use today and enabled the city of Zagreb to expand the network. In the meantime, used Mannheim- type vehicles from Mannheim have been acquired from MVV Verkehr AG . Since summer 2005, low-floor wagons have also been in operation, which were manufactured in Croatia by Crotram (a joint venture between Končar elektroindustrija, Gredelj and Đuro Đaković ). By 2010, 170 of these type TMK 2200 or ZET 2200 railcars had been delivered in series, which were divided into two series.
