The first known mention of the name comes from 1557. In a council manual of the Falkenstein Bailiwick in Wolfwil , Canton Solothurn one reads: (Quote) “That Hanss Bümpj, while he is pleasing the Nachburen, accepted a burger, should take the oath that he here three pounds directed outwards ”. Hanss was accepted into citizenship for three pounds. "Hanss Bümpj" probably came from France .
