origin

The first known mention of the name comes from 1557. In a council manual of the Falkenstein Bailiwick in Wolfwil , Canton Solothurn one reads: (Quote) “That Hanss Bümpj, while he is pleasing the Nachburen, accepted a burger, should take the oath that he here three pounds directed outwards ”. The Basel coat of arms Pümpin is a shield that is vertically separated into three parts, analogous to the French tricolor, but in the colors red-silver-black. An exact allocation is not possible.

About 80 percent of the Pümpin families live in north-western Switzerland.

A large tribe of Pümpin lives in Chile in the Región de Valparaíso . They are the descendants of the gardener Benjamin Pümpin, who emigrated in 1881.
