Pümpin was born in Gelterkinden as the son of a farmer. He attended the Böckten district school and the Liestal agricultural school. He spent his year in Switzerland with a carpenter. He liked working with wood, so he built a small carpenter's workshop with machines for woodworking on the farm. He completed his military service in the cavalry recruit school in Schachen in Aarau and served as a cavalryman during the Second World War. In 1933 he married the farmer's daughter Rosa Marti from Himmelsgrund Häfelfingen. The marriage gave birth to the four children Annarös, Margrit, Karl and Lotti. The son of his daughter Annarös is the comedian Fredy Schär .

Career

Pümpin's painting training was self-taught. Artistic exchange took place with painters from the area. Pümpin had a fondness for impressionism . At a young age, Karl Pümpin went out into the great outdoors with his cousin Fritz Pümpin to paint. While Fritz was able to take up the profession of painter, Karl Pümpin only had a hobby. Karl Pümpin exhibited his works in the wagon on his farm and met with great interest. He also exhibited and sold at the exhibitions of the Basellandschaftliche Kunstförderung. So he became known as "the painting farmer".

He painted mostly with oil paints; with brush and spatula. There are also some charcoal drawings. Pümpin could not deepen his talent because he had to continue his father's farm. He died in Gelterkinden on April 9, 1975.
