Fritz Pümpin (born March 29, 1901 in Gelterkinden ; † July 5, 1972 there ) was a Swiss painter .

Life

After primary school in Gelterkinden, Fritz Pümpin went to the district school in Böckten . In 1916 he took painting and drawing lessons from the painter Janet in Colombier during a stay in Switzerland. After returning he went to a business school in Basel to become a businessman.

In 1919 he started working in his father's wine shop. In between there was also a temporary visit to the trade school in Basel and visits to exhibitions and museums at home and abroad. He also dealt with the prehistory of his closer home. He discovered the Celtic pottery village "Sissiacum". Fritz Pümpin was a member of the cantonal antiquity commission of Baselland.

In 1936 he married Rösli Gerster from Gelterkinden. The marriage produced two sons: Volkmar (* 1937) and Cuno Pümpin (* 1939). Together, the couple dared to build an exclusive life as a painter. Between 1939 and 1945 Fritz Pümpin was an armed soldier in the relief service in the Swiss border guard. A number of soldier pictures were created during this time. Among other things, he drew the arrival of the Allies on the Swiss border near Basel, the transfer of Alsatian children to Switzerland and the bombardment of Basel in March 1945.

The "Pümpin-Haus" in Gelterkinden

In 1945 he acquired the now listed villa at Rickenbacherstrasse 2 in Gelterkinden, which the textile manufacturer Ernst Handschin-Spiess had built in 1896 by the architect and sculptor Isidor Raphael Pellegrini (1871–1954), the brother of the painter Alfred Heinrich Pellegrini .

From then on, Pümpin painted in oils and pastels in his home in Basel and made study trips to France, Italy, Spain and Holland. Landscapes and farming villages are the focus of his artistic work

His cousin was the farmer and painter Karl Pümpin .
