politics

Inspector Pümpin , as he was called, played a major role in Gelterkinden and later in Basel. He was a community clerk, councilor and later mayor. He was also a representative of the upper Basel area in the Grand Council of Basel. In 1810 he was elected to the civil court, which he soon also presided over. In 1811 Samuel was given the title "Captain". It appears that even then he was the inspector of the 3rd Military District. After a few years he was promoted to major. The office of inspector is responsible for equipping and arming the Basel militiamen. He also monitored military training and regular shooting exercises were carried out under his control. In the turmoil of separation between the cantons, he was vehemently opposed to the separation of the cantons and one of the leading figures in the Gelterkinder Basel faithful. In the Gelterkinder storm , when the Basel bidder attacked the Basel-loyal Gelterkinden, he had to flee the village. After the canton split, he sold his properties in Gelterkinden and moved to Basel. He did not want to live under the new landscape government. In Basel he was soon elected to the Small Council (the cantonal government ). On February 3, 1834, the people of Basel thanked him with an honorary citizenship of the city.
