history

The Volksstimme was founded in 1882 as the Volksstimme von Baselland by an editorial committee as a mouthpiece against the project of a federal secretariat for the primary school (colloquially known as "school governor") (which was heavily rejected in the federal vote of November 26, 1882). The newspaper had a circulation of 1,000 copies. In 1885 Jakob Schaub-Buser (1862–1950), son of committee member Johann Jakob Schaub-Zeller, took over the printing of the newspaper, in 1900 also the publishing rights.

In 1904 the move took place in the same street (Hauptstrasse 33), in 1921 the first Linotype typesetting machines were used. In 1948 Schaub bought the adjoining property at Hauptstrasse 31 (Eckstein House) and enlarged the typesetting. In 1932, the founder's son, Hans Schaub-Horand, acquired the property at Bahnhofstrasse 33 (Häfelfinger House). In 1949 the sole proprietorship was transformed into J. Schaub-Buser AG, and Hans Schaub-Horand took over the management. Jakob Schaub-Buser died on March 3, 1950. In 1957, a second-hand 8-page rotary press , built in 1924, was purchased for printing the newspaper, which has since grown to around 5,000 copies.

In 1968 Hans Schaub-Horand handed over management of the company to his sons Hansjakob Schaub (responsible for the newspaper) and Peter Schaub (responsible for printing and typesetting). In the same year, the first punched tape-controlled typesetting machine and an offset machine in medium format were purchased. In 1972 the newspaper's frequency of publication was changed from two to three times a week. In 1978 the changeover from lead to photo typesetting took place .

In 1980, the company acquired a brand-new Solna Distributor web offset press, which was housed in the Bahnhofstrasse 31 building it had acquired a year earlier. The edition of the Volksstimme now exceeded 7,000 copies. In 1988, a web offset press was purchased that increased newspaper printing capacity from 16 to 24 pages. In 1989 photo typesetting began to be replaced by desktop publishing .

In 1990, the certified circulation of the Volksstimme exceeded 8,000 copies for the first time. In 1995 production was switched to Macintosh computers and QuarkXPress , while the Volksstimme was given a new layout. In 2001 the company was renamed Schaub Medien AG. In December 2008, Basler Zeitung Medien AG was commissioned to print the newspaper. The website was launched in 2010. After the closure of the Basler Zeitung Medien AG printing works in 2013, the printing of the newspaper was handed over to the NZZ printing works, NZZ Print in Schlieren, after the closure of this printing works, the Tagblatt Print of CH Media in St. Gallen.
