QuarkXPress is a frame-oriented layout program from the US manufacturer Quark Inc. The first version was released in 1987 for the Apple Macintosh .

description

The original developer of QuarkXPress is Tim Gill , who founded Quark Inc. in Denver in 1981 and initially wrote word processing software for Apple II and III .

In addition to Aldus PageMaker , which appeared in 1985, QuarkXPress is considered a pioneer in desktop publishing (DTP) and today, with Adobe InDesign, is one of the market-leading DTP layout programs. It has numerous prepress functions required in the field of print media , such as B. typographic control, the possibility of color separation , trapping algorithms , PostScript and PDF output. Furthermore, it also offers functions for HTML5, eBook and app export for the increasing cross-media publishing requirements.

use

QuarkXPress is used in advertising agencies and by freelance graphic designers, prepress service providers, and in printing and publishing houses. Together with content management systems such as Quark Publishing System (QPS) it is often found in professional newspaper and magazine production. Further areas of application are leaflets , brochures , catalogs, leaflets, posters, business stationery and also database publishing applications. Thanks to the support of tables of contents and indexes, it is also suitable for design-intensive book productions.

Since QuarkXPress 5, the program can also be used to create websites (HTML) directly without having to use an external HTML editor . Since October 2006, the Quark Interactive Designer plug-in has also been able to create Flash content directly from QuarkXPress. This plug-in has been included since QuarkXPress 8.

From version 9, content can also be exported to the ePUB format and the Blio format developed by Ray Kurzweil . As of QuarkXPress 9.5, HTML5 -based apps for Android , Apple iOS and Kindle Fire as well as web apps can also be exported.

In the German-speaking countries, the QuarkXPress Passport variant was previously sold, which, unlike the variant available in England and the USA, offered multilingual language support. The passport variants were abolished with version 8. The only differences between today's "editions" are the user interface languages and the ability to create Japanese typography.

Each edition of QuarkXPress 8 and 9 supports 38 languages and language variants - each for hyphenation and spell checking. The user interface can be changed dynamically to other languages. The following editions are distributed: America's (North and South), America's Plus, East Asia, Eastern Europe, United Kingdom, United Kingdom Plus, Western Europe and Western Europe Plus. The plus variants each add the option of creating Japanese typography.

Range of functions

With the support of plug-ins (which Quark calls "XTensions") since 1989, the functionality of the program can be expanded.

From version 3.1, QuarkXPress is also available for Windows systems.

From version 4.1 QuarkXPress supports the import and export of content via XML and PDF import as well as PDF export (only via Distiller).

From version 5 the software provides not only levels but also features for creating websites (HTML). Due to various protests about the absolutely necessary hardware keys ( dongles ) from version 4 onwards, these were abolished with version 5.

QuarkXPress 6 is the first version that can run natively under macOS , version 7.01 was the first universal binary variant.

Version 6.5 added support for the Document Object Model (DOM) XML document description format , but it is read-only. From version 6.5, native Photoshop files (PSD) and Excel files (XLS) can also be imported. It also allows PDFs to be created directly without the aid of Distiller.

Version 7 added OpenType and Unicode support as well as native shadows and transparencies; the latter can also be applied granularly to sub-objects. In addition, version 7 offers support for JDF and PDF / X as well as flightcheck functions and those for collaboration (so several layouters can work simultaneously on the same page with the help of so-called composition zones).

Quark delivers multi-operating system versions from version 7 and allows the dual use of one license. Thus, with a license QuarkXPress z. B. can be installed and used on both the Windows PC at home and the Mac in the office.

Version 8 improved the user interface and allowed drag & drop from other applications (such as Finder or Adobe Bridge) and back again. According to a study commissioned by Quark, this should significantly increase the working speed. QuarkXPress 8 also provides East Asian typography, multiple baseline grids (including vertical), adjustable optical border adjustment, object styles, Illustrator (AI) import and built-in flash export. With this version, Quark has continued on the path taken in 2015, earning a lot of praise from users and further shortening Indesign's lead.

QuarkXPress 9 offers automation functions and new design functions, such as nested styles, legends (marginal elements), lists and numbering, a wizard for complex Bezier shapes, contact sheets (multi-image import), cloning pages, etc.

QuarkXPress 10 is the first Cocoa-native version of QuarkXPress 10 and offers a new "graphics engine" that now displays EPS, PDF, AI and other vector formats natively and thus in high resolution. For users of a 32-bit version of Windows, version 10.5.2 is the last version that can be installed, from version 2015 you need a 64-bit operating system.

QuarkXPress 2015 (Version 11) can import footnotes and endnotes from MS Word or create them yourself, table styles find their way into Quark and also variables (for live running headings or cross-references). You can also define keyboard shortcuts yourself and export them as PDF / X-4. From November 2017 to October 2018, the magazine c't (Heise Verlag) offered an unrestricted version of QuarkXPress 2015 for € 9.90 and reported that Heise Verlag uses QuarkXPress to create its magazines.

QuarkXPress 2016 (Version 12): converting PDF, Illustrator and EPS files into native QuarkXPress objects, inserting Illustrator and Microsoft Office objects as native QuarkXPress objects, converting a print layout into an HTML5 layout, HTML5 export with direct preview, multi-level Gradients with any number of colors, support for OpenType Stylistic Sets, new Windows user interface, color picker tool (color pipette), support of the touchpad for gesture control (Mac only), dynamic guides for text frame columns, the content variables automatically break at the end of the line, support for ICCv4 Profiles.

QuarkXPress 2017 (Version 13): Non-destructive "image processing" (filters and effects as well as color corrections), text and paragraph shading, text and paragraph borders, text outline (from "Live Text"), transparency modes (such as soft light, multiply etc.) , Line spanners and separators, export of responsive HTML5 publications, export of iOS single apps (at no additional cost). In 2017 Quark allowed an upgrade to QuarkXPress Version 13 from competing products such as Adobe InDesign, CorelDraw or Microsoft Publisher.
