Aldus Corporation
The Aldus Corporation (named after the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius ) developed the computer program PageMaker for the Apple Macintosh , which is regarded as the first desktop publishing (DTP) program. The company was founded by Paul Brainerd .
PageMaker appeared in July 1985 and required Adobe's PostScript page description language for printing on the Apple LaserWriter laser printer . From 1986 there was also a version for the IBM PC .
Aldus later launched the FreeHand drawing program , which was licensed by Altsys . In September 1994, Aldus and Adobe merged . Freehand then came to Macromedia and, after the merger in 2005, also to Adobe.
Aldus developed the TIFF and OPI industry standards .
